Counting 1 to 10 – The Explanation
Counting 1 to 10 goes beyond rote counting. Counting 1 to 10 explores number content hoping to teach the different between numbers and numerals. Numbers represent content. Numerals are figures.
Counting 1 to 10 is a classical musical tool consisting of 10 verses and a melody line of 6 notes: C to A. The repetition of baby animal voices reflects the number content of their verse. For example: verse 2 is represented by 2 baby kittens whose voices are heard individually during the song.
The song is recorded 3 times. Each time using a quiet calming introduction and a fast upbeat jazz ending.
1st – The listener is introduced to the lyrics and melody line by opera singers. Clarity to the concept of number content is accomplished by variations in the singers voices.
2nd – The melody line is played by a jazz saxophone. Each of the ten verses are represented by a different orchestral instrument. Each animal is presented by a different percussion instrument. The listener will hear repetitions of the percussion instrument to represent the number content.
3rd – The voice and jazz saxophone both disappear. The composition stands on its own. The listener is challenged to hum along, move like the animal the music reflects, and listen for the repetition of baby animal voices.
Enjoy!
